Ramakant Jaiswal and Tiharu Birhor

On 28th September we organized a program with the school and Angan Wadi children of Dongar Tarai village in Korba District of Chhattisgarh, to spread awareness about the uncultivated food that the Birhors have traditionally collected and consumed. The program involved 18 children, 11 boys and 7 girls, who were taken to the adjoining forest where village elders helped them identify a number of uncultivated food plants and shared their knowledge with the children.

The village elders present included Mehnar Singh, Kartik Ram and Angan Wadi worker Latita. The children got to see and learn about a variety of uncultivated foods like Kadwa kanda, Chindi kanda, Char, tendu, Chati bhaji, Charota bhaji, Khurru and several other tubers, leafy vegetables and fruits.

The children were told that they should try to learn about their forests and the benefits they get from them and use that information in their daily lives.
