On the 25th of July a training program on mixed cropping practices was conducted by Rohidas Yadav of PRERAK in the Kamar village of Devdongar, Mainpur Block, Gariyaband District, Chhattisgarh. The village mukhiya (head) and all villagers extended their wholehearted support to the program. Rohidas Yadav shared the benefits of mixed cropping agricultural practices and explained how on the same plot of land at the same time farmers can reap the benefits of cultivating 3 to 4 different crops while increasing the productivity of their lands. He also spoke about the importance of Kitchen Gardens especially in the face of challenges posed to food availability by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns.
He reveled that just like other years seeds for sowing in Kitchen Gardens are being distributed to households across the area. He urged the villagers to sow these seeds in their Badi (homestead plots) and cultivate a variety of greens and vegetable which they can use to meet self consumption needs reducing the need to leave their houses in search of food. He urged the Kamar villagers to become aware and take positive steps to secure their future. He encouraged them to prepare their Badi at the onset of the monsoons and plant a variety of greens and vegetables. He emphasized the need for the Kamar people to unify and work together for the future of their community. He emphasized the need for them to increasingly focus on agriculture in their fields and badi and also revive and strengthen their traditional agricultural practices.
